My Big Fat Greek Wedding
My Big Fat Greek Wedding is a timeless comedy written by Joel Zwick which follows the love life of Toula Portkalos and Ian Miller. The film throws a humorous and witty twist on all the long lasting Greek wedding traditions. The movie is narrated by the main character, Toula Portkalos, who like all Greek women says she was put upon this earth to fulfil three purposes: to marry a Greek man, to have Greek children and to feed everyone until the day she dies.
The film’s strong emphasis on Greek culture is evident through the portrayal of enormous extended families, extravagant weddings and exuberant wedding feats. The movie takes an unexpected turn when Toula, 30 and still single, meets an incredibly un-Greek man called Ian Miller. Toula falls hopelessly in love with Ian and he with her.
The families of Toula and Ian uneasily coexist, this clash of personalities arising because of the reserved nature of the English family not so complimented by the loud, charismatic and over the top qualities of the Greeks.
There is a relatable element to this movie, which encourages a more personal engagement from the audience. This is triggered through the ordinariness of the characters in the movie. It is a realistic love story between to seemingly everyday people, not your typical flawless Hollywood movie stars. Hence this meant that a lot more people I feel would be able to connect with this film and really enjoy its humorous take on Greek wedding culture.
After Ian pops the question to Toula, the intensity of the movie amps up as preparations is made for the big day; perhaps not your regular western wedding preparations though. The huge extended family is invited; this is cleverly contrasted against Ian Millers family who fill only the first two rows of the chapel whereas the Greeks are bustling to find a seat on their side of the room. Some long lasting traditions are incorporated into the ceremony for example spitting on the bride as she walks down the aisle for long lasting luck and love between the couple.
It is my opinion that the movie “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” has captured the essence of Greek culture and wedding perfectly. This romantic comedy is suitable for anyone wanting to enjoy a light-hearted film with a witty and humorous twist on life. I rate “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” 4 popcorn boxes out of 5.
